At Contento Social Homes, we are passionate about improving the lives of survivors of domestic abuse and their children. We believe that providing safe accommodation and equipping families with the skills they need to thrive is essential to breaking the cycle of abuse and ensuring a brighter future for everyone affected.
As we approach this year’s 16 Days of Activism, from 25th November to 10th December, the theme “Every 11 Minutes, a Woman is Killed. #NoExcuse” reminds us of the urgent need to address gender-based violence. This global campaign highlights the harsh reality many women face and urges communities to stand together to end violence against women and girls.
Thank You to Those Supporting Children Affected by Domestic Abuse
We want to echo the heartfelt appreciation expressed in the recent newsletter from the Domestic Abuse Commissioner (DAC) for everyone who commissions and provides vital services for children affected by domestic abuse. The work you do is transformative, and we are proud to be part of a network that strives to support children and young people in the UK.
In the coming months, the DAC will be releasing reports focusing on children and young people’s experiences, and we are eager to see the findings that will shape future support. The importance of addressing children’s needs cannot be overstated, as early intervention and consistent support make a significant difference.
Highlighting the Need for Funding and Support
The DAC has also published a “by and for” briefing paper, advocating for more funding for specialist services tailored to survivors from diverse communities. At Contento Social Homes, we understand the critical role these services play, especially as we provide culturally sensitive and accessible support to the women and children in our care. We stand with the Commissioner in calling for greater funding and are committed to amplifying these important conversations.
Working Together for Long-Term Change
We are inspired by the government’s mission-led approach to tackling domestic abuse, with a focus on ambitious and measurable objectives. We hope this commitment translates into meaningful changes that prioritize survivor safety and wellbeing. The DAC’s active involvement in shaping strategies, such as attending roundtables on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), is crucial for ensuring that the voices of survivors and the needs of frontline services are heard.
Upcoming Events and Resources
We encourage everyone to get involved in the events and campaigns happening during the 16 Days of Activism. From the HALT research webinar series hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University to the Traveller Movement’s conference on gender equality, there are opportunities to learn, connect, and advocate for change.
Additionally, the new Cafcass domestic abuse policy is a step forward in prioritizing child wellbeing. Language matters, and this policy reflects a shift towards more survivor-sensitive communication, which is essential in creating safe spaces for children to disclose abuse.
Our Commitment Continues
Contento Social Homes remains steadfast in our mission to support survivors of domestic abuse and their children. We are committed to working with other organisations, raising awareness, and ensuring that our services continue to provide safety, empowerment, and hope. As we engage in the 16 Days of Activism, let’s come together to say #NoExcuse to violence and champion a future where every woman and child can live free from fear.
Together, we can make a difference.
