Online violence is now one of the fastest-growing forms of gender-based abuse.
On Day 1 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Contento Social Homes highlights a critical message:
Online harm is real harm — and it affects millions of women and girls worldwide.
What is Digital Violence?
Digital or technology-facilitated abuse includes:
- Online harassment and bullying
- Cyberstalking and digital surveillance
- Threats, intimidation, and coercive control
- Sharing private or intimate images without consent
- Identity misuse, impersonation, and doxxing
These forms of abuse create fear, trauma, loss of privacy, and long-term psychological harm, especially for survivors of domestic abuse.
Why It Matters
Women and girls experience higher rates of online abuse, and many perpetrators use digital tools to continue harm even after a relationship ends.
Digital violence:
- Reduces safety and freedom
- Causes anxiety and emotional distress
- Limits women’s participation online
- Extends real-world abuse into digital spaces
If women are not safe online, they are not safe anywhere.
How We Can Respond
Ending digital violence requires collective action. We must:
- Promote safer digital communities
- Report abusive accounts and harmful content
- Support survivors facing online harassment
- Advocate for stronger laws and online protections
Contento Social Homes continues to champion safety for women in every space — at home, in the community, and online.
Key Message
Unite to end digital violence against all women and girls.
Online abuse is real abuse — and it must be taken seriously.
