At the UK\u2013Zimbabwe Business Expo 2025<\/strong>, our CEO Caroline Phansi<\/strong> shared a powerful message: when women fleeing domestic abuse reach out for help, we must have a safe door to open\u2014every time. And to make that real at scale, we need more social investors to join us<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Engineer to Builder of Safe Homes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Caroline\u2019s journey began in engineering at Rolls-Royce, then pivoted towards people\u2014first supporting those experiencing homelessness, and in 2020 founding our refuge work for women and children escaping abuse. Since then, the service has grown from a handful of homes to dozens of safe spaces, supporting families on the path from crisis to independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her drive comes from lived experience and a belief that perseverance opens doors<\/strong>\u2014especially for Black women building in the diaspora. She spoke candidly about proving expertise in rooms that didn\u2019t expect it, and about turning setbacks into momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Need Is Relentless\u2014And So Is Our Response<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Demand for refuge space never slows. Every time a space opens, the phone rings\u2014because the need is immediate and urgent. That unceasing demand is exactly why we\u2019re scaling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To accelerate capacity, we\u2019ve launched a partnership\/franchise model<\/strong>\u2014training credible local operators, forging new relationships with councils, and expanding into additional local authority areas. It\u2019s bold, rigorous, and working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our vision is also transnational. We\u2019re supporting partners in Zimbabwe (e.g., Bulawayo) to help revive refuge capacity and survivor support\u2014so women can access safety and independence, wherever they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Social Investors Matter Now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is room at the table for principled capital. The opportunity to do good at scale is real\u2014and it\u2019s right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Place-Based Property Partnerships<\/strong>
    Invest in or lease suitable properties for conversion to refuge\/move-on homes. We handle compliance, operations, and wrap-around support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Growth & Working-Capital Notes<\/strong>
    Provide mission-aligned loans to underwrite rapid setup costs (mobilisation, furnishings, regulatory upgrades) as we open new safe spaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Programme Sponsorships<\/strong>
    Fund survivor essentials\u2014clinical counselling, skills pathways, and child-centred support\u2014so families stabilise faster and sustain independence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Every pound brought forward translates into real rooms, real beds, and real safety<\/strong>\u2014for mothers and children who can\u2019t wait another night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
