Celebrating Strength and Independence with Flavours
On Friday, 26 January, Contento Social Homes held an inspiring cooking event, part of its ongoing programme to empower women transitioning to an independent life after domestic abuse. This event wasn’t just about learning a new recipe; it was a journey of self-discovery, bonding, and a step towards self-sufficiency for these courageous women.

The day’s highlight was when the women taught each other how to prepare a special dish – Potato Chicken Salad, known as Olivier. This Persian dish, a delightful blend of chicken, potatoes, carrots, sweet peas, pickled cucumbers, and eggs mixed with mayonnaise and lime, symbolised more than just a meal. It was a metaphor for the diverse experiences and strengths each woman brought to the table. The preparation process involved cooking chicken, potatoes, carrots, and sweet peas in salted water, followed by mixing them with finely diced ingredients and seasoning. This collaborative effort mirrored the supportive environment at Contento Social Homes.

The event was well-attended, showing the enthusiasm and eagerness among the women to learn and grow. The success of this event was made possible by the generous support of The People’s Health Trust and The Health Lottery (West Midlands), who provided the funding. Held at one of Contento Social Homes’ safe refuges, the event was a testament to the safe and nurturing space the organisation provides.
Beyond Cooking: A Journey of Healing
As the women shared stories and experiences while preparing the Salad Olivieh, it became evident that this event was more than just a cooking class. It was a step towards healing, building confidence, and fostering a sense of community. Each ingredient they chopped and mixed represented the rebuilding of their lives, piece by piece, with care and support.
Contento Social Homes remains committed to providing such empowering experiences for survivors of domestic abuse. By equipping them with essential life skills, like cooking, the organisation hopes to pave the way for these women to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
