Day 15: Reporting Is the New Speaking Up – 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Day 15 highlights the importance of reporting harmful behaviour online

Digital violence relies on silence — and reporting breaks that silence.
On Day 15 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Contento Social Homes emphasises the critical role of reporting online abuse in protecting women and girls.

Many survivors experience digital harassment, stalking, image-based abuse, and threatening messages but feel unsure about whether reporting will make a difference. But every report matters.
Reporting abusive accounts, harmful posts, or unsafe online behaviour:

  • Alerts platforms to harmful patterns
  • Removes threatening content
  • Protects current and future victims
  • Creates accountability for perpetrators
  • Sends a message that digital violence will not be ignored

Speaking up can take many forms — sometimes it is public, sometimes it is private, and sometimes it is through formal reporting systems. Each action creates safer online spaces and supports those who may not yet feel safe to speak for themselves.

Today, we encourage everyone to:

  • Use reporting tools on social platforms
  • Support survivors who choose to report
  • Document evidence of online abuse
  • Advocate for stronger platform responses
  • Normalise reporting as a protective act

Reporting is not betrayal. It is protection. It is advocacy. And it is a powerful form of speaking up.
