Consequences of Lockdown

2019 throughout to 2022 has seen the world in turmoil over the Covid – 19 crises. This pandemic has led to lockdowns throughout the world. In the United Kingdom lockdown lasted over the course of 1 year and a half. For many it was a nice break to stay home and spend time with their families and pick up a new hobby and start new business ventures, however, the pandemic also led to darker days for those who relied on leaving their house to get away from what happens behind closed doors.

Domestic violence cases had risen by 33% in the Covid 19 lockdown throughout the United Kingdom. There are also cases that have led to fatalities due to the support being very limited throughout the pandemic. The victims’ commissioner for England and Wales stated that they were normally looking at two murders a week which are linked to a domestic violence case but throughout the pandemic statistics were rising to a total of 16 domestic abuse killings within three weeks. That means there was 5 killings a week which is leading to a bigger crisis.

The staff at Contento Social homes still worked throughout the pandemic and were classed as key workers specially to provide support for the women we take in and look after. When the first lockdown was announced in 2020 organisations such as Women’s Aid raised their concerns about the increased risk of harm and isolation regarding those affected by domestic abuse. Over 4.5 thousand referrals were made throughout lockdown and over 11 thousand safety plans were put into place.

It is more crucial than ever to check up on your loved ones who have had a change in their behaviour due to the consequences of lockdown. Mental health issues have increased heavily over lockdown leading to a record number of suicidal thoughts increasing especially within the younger adults aging from 18-29 years old, rising from 12.5% to 14%. In the 21st century mental health is being taken way more seriously and things have improved significantly however there is a long way to go.
