Online misogyny is not just offensive — it is dangerous.
On Day 5 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Contento Social Homes highlights how digital misogyny creates real psychological, emotional, and sometimes physical harm for women and girls.
Misogyny online shows up in many forms: hateful comments, sexualised harassment, degrading messages, coordinated attacks, body shaming, threats, and harmful stereotypes. These behaviours are often normalised, ignored, or dismissed as “just online bullying” — yet the impact is deeply felt.
For survivors of domestic abuse, online misogyny can trigger trauma, reinforce fear, and damage mental health. It can escalate to stalking, coercion, and real-world violence.
Digital spaces are not separate from real life — harm online becomes harm offline.
To end digital violence, we must:
- Challenge misogynistic behaviour wherever it appears
- Support women who come forward
- Teach responsible online conduct
- Hold platforms and perpetrators accountable
- Advocate for safer digital environments
Misogyny is not harmless.
It shapes culture, influences behaviour, and causes painful, long-term harm.
Ending online misogyny is a critical step toward protecting women and creating safer communities both online and offline.
