A Place of Refuge: How This Support Worker Helps Abuse Survivors Thrive with No English, No Job, No Hope.

Imagine fleeing your home, leaving everything behind. You might not even speak the language of the place you find refuge. This is the reality for many survivors of domestic abuse – and where Contento Social Homes steps in.

Support workers are the heart and soul of our mission to empower survivors of domestic abuse. These remarkable individuals dedicate themselves to guiding women, many from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, through a challenging and transformative journey. Today, we spotlight one such support worker, Uju, and her dedication to creating brighter futures.

Uju’s Heartfelt Approach

When a survivor comes into Uju’s care, her focus is understanding them as individuals. “The first thing I do is get to know them,” Uju says, eyes filled with warmth. “It’s about understanding who they are, their journey, their hopes.” With many women arriving unable to speak English, Uju bridges that gap with translation tools, her kindness shining through language barriers. She utilises Google Translate or Language Line to open those essential first lines of communication.

The initial days are some of the hardest. Uju helps navigate the maze of Universal Credit, knowing those first weeks without income are a crucible of fear and uncertainty. Here’s where Contento’s Fundraising Officer, Progress, becomes vital – securing grants, Food Bank aid, the bare essentials to keep hope alive.

Beyond Survival: Health, Language, and a Future

Uju sees healthcare as foundational, helping women register with local GPs to ensure their wellbeing. Sometimes, she even attends those first few appointments to smooth the process until they’re comfortable going independently. But true independence hinges on language. Uju’s voice softens, “Some just want to sleep, hide from their pain. But I encourage them, help them find the will to stay active and engaged during their transition,” Uju is always there to offer a gentle guiding hand. With time and support, she helps them build confidence and the skills needed to thrive.

Breaking down the language barrier is a huge priority – Uju enrols women in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, unlocking the path to better jobs and true self-reliance.That transformation often takes months, but it’s worth every step. Uju beams with pride when the women she supports find jobs, often in healthcare or cleaning, their first paychecks a testament to their resilience.

The Challenges and the Triumphs

“Not everyone’s gratitude is immediate,” Uju admits. “Some are broken, demanding things they can’t have yet. It’s about reminding them this is temporary, that they’ll stand on their own.” It’s in these moments Uju’s strength shines through.

Despite the challenges, her fulfillment is undeniable. “I learn from them, adapt to their cultures…it enriches me as much as I hope I help them.”

Your Support Changes Lives

Here at Contento Social Homes, we primarily rely on Google Translate or Language Line to open those essential first lines of communication.

However, these resources can be limited, especially with the increasing number of women needing our support. We’re constantly striving to find ways to remove communication barriers, but this can put a strain on our budget. Your generous donation can help ensure these essential translation services are always available, allowing Uju and our other support workers to connect with women in need, regardless of their language

Uju is one of our many unsung heroes at Contento Social Homes. Your donation gives women like her the tools they need to not just survive, but thrive. DONATE TO OUR LANGUAGE LINE.
