Online trolling is often dismissed as “just a joke,” but for many women and girls, it causes real emotional harm, fear, and long-term psychological impact. On Day 7 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Contento Social Homes calls for a cultural shift:
stop normalising trolling — start promoting respect.
Trolling is not harmless. It includes mocking, insults, belittling comments, harassment, threats, and coordinated attacks intentionally designed to provoke, embarrass, or intimidate. For survivors of domestic abuse, trolling can be especially triggering, reconnecting them to past trauma and eroding their feelings of safety online.
Respect is the foundation of safe digital spaces. When individuals choose compassion over cruelty, and accountability over anonymity, online communities become healthier and safer for everyone.
Together, we can:
- Challenge trolling behaviour when we see it
- Report harmful accounts
- Support women targeted by online abuse
- Promote digital empathy and responsibility
- Encourage positive interactions and safe online cultures
Respect is a choice — and choosing it protects lives.
