A Journey of Transformation: A Survivor’s Story of Empowerment and Independence

Caroline Phansi with the transitioning Survivor

In November 2023, a profound moment of reflection and celebration marked the journey of one of Contento Social Homes’ most resilient survivors. Caroline Phansi, our CEO, personally visited this remarkable woman as she prepared to transition from our refuge into independent living after three years—a testament to her courage and the unwavering support provided by Contento Social Homes.

Finding a Sanctuary

“When I came, I had no confidence. I was feeling very sad,” the survivor recalls, her voice a mirror to the pain and despair that once enveloped her. Contento Social Homes became more than just a refuge; it was a sanctuary where she found the support and care needed to rebuild her life. “Yeah, but Contento Social Homes was like my own home,” she shared, highlighting the sense of safety and belonging that has been crucial to her healing process.

The transformation she experienced is nothing short of remarkable. From assisting with practical needs like recovering her son’s lost passport to empowering her to gain functional skills in English and maths, Contento Social Homes stood by her every step of the way. “Now I feel I have confidence. I am independent. I can do all work by my own,” she asserts, a declaration of her newfound strength and autonomy.

What’s even more inspiring is how this empowerment has come full circle. The survivor has become a pillar of support for others, sharing her journey and lessons with new residents. “So there were other survivors that would come in the same home that I could now also help,” she explains, demonstrating the ripple effect of kindness and support. From teaching cooking skills to guiding them on how to navigate public transport and shopping, she has become a beacon of hope and guidance for many.

However, the journey has not been without its challenges. Caroline Phansi highlighted the significant obstacles faced by survivors in securing council housing, which often prolongs their stay in refuge spaces. “The local Council housing is just a big nightmare,” Caroline notes, emphasising the need for systemic changes to better support survivors in their transition to independence.
