A Bedtime Story Shouldn’t Be a Horror Story. Help Us Change That

When we picture childhood, we think of tucked-in blankets, whispered stories, and a feeling of absolute safety as a child drifts to sleep. But for some children across the UK, bedtime is anything but peaceful.

Home isn’t a haven; it’s a battleground. Shouting, threats, maybe even the terrifying sound of things breaking – this is the soundtrack to their nights.

The Damage That Goes Deeper Than Bruises

Domestic abuse isn’t just about physical harm (though that’s horrific enough). Children exposed to this environment often experience:

  • Severe anxiety and nightmares: Constant fear disrupts their sense of safety.
  • Learning difficulties: Trauma makes it hard to concentrate at school.
  • Behavioural issues: They may act out aggressively, or become withdrawn.
  • Long-term health effects: Toxic stress caused by abuse can lead to physical health problems later in life.
  • The pattern repeating: Children who witness abuse are more likely to be in abusive relationships themselves

Contento Social Homes: A Place Where the Monsters Go Away

We don’t just provide safe shelter for Women and their Children escaping abuse. Our approach is about true healing:

  • Trauma-informed therapy: Helping children process their experiences, learning it was NEVER their fault.
  • Building resilience: Giving them coping mechanisms and the ability to trust again.
  • Re-learning ‘normal’: Playgroups, outings, the simple joy of a bedtime story read without fear.
  • Family support: We help mothers heal too, giving them tools to break the cycle of abuse.

The Story We Can Rewrite Together

“The first night here, my little girl asked when the shouting would start. Broke my heart. Now, she laughs before she sleeps. That’s because of Contento.” – Contento resident Mum

Your support makes moments like these possible.
