On 14 May 2024, Contento Social Homes proudly released its impact report for the period from February 2023 to January 2024. This landmark event took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Solihull, marking a significant moment in our ongoing commitment to support survivors of domestic abuse and their children across the United Kingdom.
A Night to Remember
The event was graced by a diverse array of stakeholders, including property owners of the safe refuges operated by Contento Social Homes, grant makers, service providers from various industries, and friends of the organisation. Our CEO, Caroline Phansi, was the visionary speaker for the evening. She shared our comprehensive vision for 2024 and beyond, highlighting the transformative activities beyond standard support, such as IT skills training, cooking and baking sessions, employability skills, peer support, and much more.
An esteemed guest, Nqobile Mpunzi, CEO and industry leader, delivered the keynote speech. Nqobile has been instrumental in the successful launch and operation of several companies in the UK and Africa, bringing a wealth of experience and inspiration to our gathering. The support advocate for the evening was Tameena Zafar, our award-winning Support Manager, who was also voted by her peers as Personality of the Year. Tameena provided invaluable insights into the workings of our refuge and the support we offer survivors to help them transition to independence. The event was seamlessly hosted by Nancy, our dedicated Referral Officer, who ensured the evening ran smoothly.
Survivor Stories
Two survivors also shared their stories, bringing the audience to their feet with their heartfelt testimonies.
1st Survivor’s Journey
“Good evening everyone,
I am here to talk about my journey with Contento Social Homes. I have been with Contento for the past three years. At the start, it was really difficult for me. Coming from an abusive relationship in a new country, it was hard to do my daily duties as English is not my first language.
When I came to Contento, the first person I met was Caroline, the CEO. I was worried before coming to Contento, as we all know moving to a new place can be stressful. But when I spoke to Caroline, she reassured me that I would be okay and that I would get as much support as I needed.
Contento has provided me with all the support for housing, studying, and weekly support sessions. I have gone from not speaking any English to standing here and speaking to you today. I now volunteer with the police and help women who have been in the same situation as me with domestic violence. I am proud to say that for someone who always needed an interpreter, I am now the one helping women at Contento who struggle with English. I help them with completing forms and any other support they may need. In fact, I’m doing so well that I’m just waiting for any employer in this room tonight to offer me a full-time job! (Just kidding, of course, but wouldn’t that be great?)
I also want to say that I really appreciate that Contento respects every religion. Contento has even held events for religious celebrations, which can make any woman from any background feel comfortable. Contento is more than a home; it is a community that listens to and supports our opinions. I would like to end by saying that nothing is impossible—even the word ‘impossible’ says ‘I am possible.’ I hope I can be an inspiration to you all. Thank you for listening. Good evening!”
2nd Survivor’s Story
“Respected everyone, my English is not that good, but I hope you all will understand me. Today, I am in front of you all, and all the credit for this goes to the Contento family. Contento counselled me because whatever wrong my husband had done to me had become a fear in my heart. I improved a lot with counselling, and because of my love for cooking, I started my YouTube channel called Home Book Kitchen. Contento gave me the opportunity to give training sessions to other girls as well. Whatever I am today is all because of my Contento family. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart—my support worker Alisa, my manager, and progress manager Tameen, and all the Contento members. I apologise because I do not know everyone’s names, but without your support, I was nothing. I had even forgotten my identity, but today I am who I am because of your support. I have now found a reason to live. Just like Contento supported me, when I stand on my own feet, I will also be able to help someone. Once again, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
