Silence is not neutral — it protects perpetrators, not survivors.
On Day 11 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Contento Social Homes highlights an uncomfortable truth: when digital violence goes unchallenged, it grows.
Whether it comes in the form of harassment, misogynistic comments, threats, coercive messages, or image-based abuse, digital violence thrives in spaces where people stay silent. Many women and girls endure harmful online behaviour alone, often fearing judgment, disbelief, or escalation.
But silence has consequences:
- It normalises harmful behaviour
- It emboldens perpetrators
- It isolates survivors
- It spreads a message that abuse is acceptable
- It creates unsafe digital environments for everyone
Calling out harmful behaviour, reporting abusive accounts, supporting survivors, and educating others are all ways to break the silence that shields digital violence.
Creating safer online spaces requires collective responsibility — not passive observation.
When we refuse to stay silent, we protect survivors and challenge the culture that allows digital violence to continue.
